Dona MARIA II - (Rio de Janeiro, 4/4/1819-Lisbon, 15/11/1853)

Maria da Glória Joana Carlota Leopoldina da Cruz Francisca Xavier de Paula Isidora Micaela Gabriela Rafaela Gonzaga de Bragança. Daughter of Pedro IV, 1st Emperor of Brazil, and Leopoldina Josefa Carolina, Archduchess of Austria. She ascended the throne in 1826 due to her father's abdication, on the condition that she marry her uncle, Miguel, who would be entrusted with the regency until his niece was of age. Faced with Miguel's failure to fulfil his agreement, she married Prince Augusto of Leuchtenberg (1810-1835) in her first marriage (1 December 1834), from whom she was widowed two months after the wedding. She consorted in a second marriage (9 April 1836) with Ferdinand Augustus of Saxe-Coburg Gotha. Tomás de Mello Breyner recalls that the people of Mafra "were very fond of Queen Maria II. She was the Good Mother who scolded her children and even beat them when they didn't respond quickly to the greetings of the humble. In the summer, she used to wear chintz to teach the other ladies to be sparing" (Memórias, p. 182-183). The same memoirist adds that when a man in the street greeted her by taking off his hat and bowing, the sovereign would say: "He's certainly a miguelista". When the royal couple came to Mafra, it was customary to hand over certain sums intended for the poor. On one occasion, the Queen was asked to give alms to needy families. Maria II granted it, remarking: "Poor things! Perhaps they only have soup, meat and rice for dinner".
