Mock-up of the Church of St Andrew in Mafra

CARLOS MANUEL LOUREIRO
2001
conjectural reconstruction on a scale of 1:50
plaster and wood
Archaeology Area: No inventory #.
Exhibition: Santo André de Mafra: from Archaeology to History (Mafra, 30 November 2001 to 2005).

The data collected from the documents, the architectural analysis and the archaeological excavations allowed us to identify various periods in the history of the Church of Santo André. This is despite the intervention by the Directorate General for National Buildings and Monuments, which stripped the church of traces of the Modern Age to allegedly return the building more to its medieval appearance.

The model on display is a theoretical and simultaneous representation of two of the building's construction phases, between the 16th century (construction of lateral buttresses for the vaulted ceiling on the north elevation) and the 19th century (construction of lateral bodies: bell tower; House of the Brotherhood of the Blessed Sacrament; lateral building of unknown functionality on the south elevation).
